long island:the place to be!!

hab dies gerade von einer freundin geschickt bekommen.da ich  2 jahre auf long island (NY) gelebt habe, kann ich nur sagen, dass vieles wirklich stimmt.aber trotzdem ist es echt zum schmunzeln
vorsicht lang!!

Only those of us who have lived on Long Island (N.Y.) will truly appreciate
this.............

You're truly from Lawn Guylan (Long Island) if
you can relate to any of the following:

1. You've always loved Billy Joel and you own several of his "records."

2. You actually know someone who went to "Sachem"....

3. Seeing a concert at Jones Beach Marine Theater..the
best place in the world to see a show.  (bonus points if you're old enough
to have seen Guy Lombardo pilot his speedboat past the seats at full
throttle!)

4. Is it just me, or is every girl from Nassau County a bitch?
....hey, watch it!!

5. Billy Joel said it best, "either you date a rich girl from the
North Shore or a cool girl from the South Shore."

6. What's the big deal about the Hamptons ?

7. If you're not from Long Island or one of the five boroughs, you're not
really from "NEW YAWK!"

8. You don't go to Manhattan....you go to "The City."

9. When someone asks you, "where are you from?", you
don't say N.Y....you say "from Lawn Guylan" like it was
already the 51st state.

10. You never, EVER, want to "change at Jamaica........."

11. You never realize you have an accent until you leave (or until you go
back for a visit and everyone sounds funny!)

12. Your parents took you to Nathans or Carvel (on the way home from the
beach).

13. The Belt Parkway is somethng you want to avoid!

14. You've been to the OBI..............

15. At some point in your life, you've either gone clamming
or caught a bluefish.

16. Good (I mean GREAT) pizza is located no more than
ten minutes away.....from ANY PLACE.........

17. Although they are within close driving distance, you may
not have visited the Empire State Building, the Statue of
Liberty, the Museum of Natural History, etc.....BUT YOU
HAVE BEEN TO RADIO CITY MUSIC HALL AT LEAST
ONE TIME!

18. You replace the letter "r" from the end of words that end
with "r" with an "ah"...i.e., wantah........beah.......mothah,
fathah, sistah, brotha.

19. You curse..........A LOT !!!

20. You can name at least three players on the Islanders
Stanley Cup teams.

21. You've "body-surfed" at Jones Beach.....or, actually
surf-boarded at Gilgo Beach.

22. A "public" beach.......what's that?

23. Is the club scene really that great?....(only if you're a
"guido")

24. Going to the diner at 2:00 a.m. (with a bunch of "guidos"
from the club)

25. Either your parents or your grandparents live in "the city"
(or one of the five boroughs)

26. You've had a seagull 'crap' on your car.

27. No matter how big your current house is now, you can't
believe how your old house has shrunk, upon a visit....

28. You or someone you know has owned an animal that
came from the North Shore Animal League.

29. You've "cruised" on Hempstead Turnpike, Jericho
Turnpike, or Northern Blvd. in a Mustang GT.or a
convertible with the top DOWN.

30. You know someone with a cabana on the 'Jewish
Riveria' (Long Beach, Lido Beach Rockaway Beach,etc.)

31. You've walked through the tunnels at Smith's Point or
the underpass at Jones Beach.

32. The speed limit is posted at 55 on the L.I.E.; but, in
reality, traffic travels at 5 mph.

33. Quick!.......Who is the Nassau County Executive? Don't
know, do you?! AND you don't give a damn!

34. You don't have to go far to see the rest of your family.

35. Grumman

36. You know the exact streets that divided your school
districts, but have no idea which voting district you're in.

37. You've gotten drunk at the Boardy Barn.

38. You know the difference between WLIR and WDRE,
even though they played the same music.

39. You are an Islander/Met/Jet fan or a Ranger/Yankee/
Giant fan and there is NO passover, PERIOD!

40. You can correctly pronounce places like Happauge,
Ronkonkoma, Islandia, Quogue, Massapequa (which, by
the way is 'Matzoh-Pizza' because of the Jewish and
Italian population .........the home of Ray Romano)

41. Doesn't everyone in the country pay at least $5500 a
year in property taxes on a Levitt-sized home?

Hallo Luziferccc!

Can you correctly pronounce "Copiague"?  'Cause that's where I'll be moving to after 13 years of living in "the city".  Guess that'll make me a "cool girl from the South Shore" now .

Die Liste hat mich definitiv zum Schmunzeln gebracht, da ich tatsaechlich am 1. November umziehe.  Bin ja auch noch nicht sicher, wie ich mein neues Vorortleben verkraften werde, aber zum Glueck liegt unser zukuenftiges Zuhause ein paar Meilen hinter der Suffolk County Grenze.  Also aus dem schlimmsten Gewuehl von Suburbia Hell bin ich raus.  Und abends den Grillen zuzuhoeren waehrend die Gaense im Abendrot uebers Inlet fliegen macht vieles wett.  Und nicht zu vergessen, 3 Minuten zum Wasser, 7 Minuten zu Walmart    

Wo hast Du denn damals gewohnt?  War's wirklich so schlimm?  Copiague ist ein kleines Kaff zwischen Amityville und Lindenhurst.  Ich muss zum Glueck nur 2x pro Woche pendeln (1 Stunde mit der LIRR ), den Rest der Woche kann ich der City den Ruecken kehren, Photos schiessen und mit meinem Hund die Gegend erkunden.  Long Island ist auch nicht unbedingt Neuland fuer mich, aber wenn ich die perfekt manikuerten Rasenflaechen in unserer Strasse sehe wird mir schon etwas mulmig...

mensch da beneide ich dich ja,dass du nach long island ziehst !!!
ich habe in bohemia gelebt.ist in der naehe vom mc arthur airport östlich von islip (ic glaub,es war exit 49 auf dem sunrise highway)
also copiague kenn ich, da wohnt die schwester meiner gastmutter (ich war au pair ).
na von da hast es ja wirklich nicht weit in die city.
also ich fands überhaupt nicht schlimm  
was mir immer passiert ist, dass jeder mit dem ich gesprochen habe, doch auch einen ur ur opa oder nen onkel aus deutschland  hat
ob es stimmt, sei  nur die frage...
wenn ich fragen darf, was arbeitest du denn und wie hast du es mit arbeitssuche gemacht??
na dann viel spass beim umziehen demnächst

Hallo Steffi!

Ist ja lustig, dass Du sogar Copiague kennst!  Beruhigt mich auch, dass Du Dein Leben auf Long Island nicht als oede empfunden hast.

Was meine Arbeit betrifft, werde ich wie gesagt zweimal die Woche zur City pendeln, wo ich einen Teilzeit Job als Assistentin eines Interior Designers habe, und einen 3. Tag werde ich fuer ihn von zu Hause aus arbeiten, Buchhaltung und so.  Zum Glueck hat mein Freund einen recht gut bezahlten Job auf Long Island gefunden, deshalb koennen wir es uns leisten, aus der Stadt wegzuziehen.  Aber auf laengere Sicht werde ich wohl trotzdem noch nach einem Teilzeit Job dort draussen suchen muessen.

 Zunaechst wird unser groesstes Problem sein, das wir nur ein Auto besitzen und die Bahnstation zu weit weg ist um zu laufen.  Wir muessen also irgendwie unseren Tagesablauf so planen, dass er mich an zwei Tagen zum Bahnhof faehrt und ich ihn an den anderen Tagen zur Arbeit fahre und abhole, wenn ich die Gegend erkunden oder Einkauefe machen will - etwas stressig aber hoffentlich machbar.
Bedauerlicherweise wird's ja nun erstmal Winter, aber ich freue mich trotzdem auf Spaziergaenge am Strand (und unserer Hund Boris ist ein Labrador, der das Wasser bei jedem Wetter liebt).  Habe auch schon ein paar Plaetze ausgekundschaftet, wo man den Hund schwimmen lassen kann.

Was Du ueber die Deutschen schreibst, scheint zu stimmen.  Unsere Vermieterin z.B. heisst Hegemann und ihre Eltern sind hier im Jahr 1930 angekommen.   Deutsche hatten einen Riesenanteil and der Auswanderungswelle im ersten 3. Drittel des zwanzigsten Jahrhunderts und egal wo man ist in diesem Land, es gibt ueberall Menschen deutscher Abstammung zuhauf.  Hat mich auch immer wieder verbluefft, ueberall zu hoeren, "my parents/grandparents came from Germany!"

In welchen Jahren warst Du denn hier?  Warst Du die ganze Zeit bei der gleichen Familie?  Da hast Du dann ja Glueck gehabt, habe schon oft ziemliche Horrorstories ueber Au-Pair Familien gehoert.  Und was hast Du so unternommen wenn Du frei hattest?  Oder bist Du dann immer nach NY reingefahren?

Wie wahr. Ich besitze so einige Schallplatten und auch CD´s von Billy Joel und ich liebe seine Musik einfach. Vor allem muss ich immer an New York denken, wenn ich das Lied "New York State of Mind" höre. Dies ist wirklich ein toller Song und passt einfach wunderbar!
