Major US Carriers Raise Fares to Cover Fuel Increases 21 May 04 14:59:12
Just two days after Continental raised worldwide fares citing higher fuel costs, at least one analyst said on 20-May-2004 the fare hike was faltering as two big carriers declined to fully match it. Analyst Jamie Baker noted that American selective increases affected only half as many fares as Continental's while Northwest increases affected just 25%. Continental increased fares by $10 each way for flights up to 1,000 miles and $20 each way for flights over 1,000 miles. Among those fully matching: United & Delta. Low-cost carrier Southwest said it would consider raising fares, but JetBlue said it did NOT plan to do so.
