Established in 1792, the village is now a museum and historic site. Members of this religious colony farmed and created fine tools, textiles, utensils and the graceful furniture for which they are known.
Visitors can tour the village where 25 of the original buildings have been restored. Narrated tours offer a glimpse into the simple Shaker lifestyle. Skilled artisans re-create the traditional Shaker crafts of broom making, dovetailing, oval box making and weaving. Nature trails wind along the herb gardens and mill ponds the Shakers designed to maximize water usage. The village plays host to several events throughout the year. Food is available.
