Ein Stadtteil, der Mitte des 19 Jh. von kubanischen Einwanderern als Zentrum der Zigarrenherstellung gegründet wurde. Heute kann man auch noch das Zigarren drehen sehen, aber insgesamt ist der Stadtteil heute mehr auf Tourismus ausgelegt. Ybor City ist wichtigster Part des Nachtlebens geworden.
In der 1818 Ninth Ave. befindet sich das Ybor City State Museum in einer ehemaligen Bäckerei mit altem intakten Steinofen. Es ist ein kleines Museum, das die Geschichte der kubanischen Zigarrenindustrie zeigt.

Fort De Soto
There are two designated swim areas. One, is at East beach where lifeguards are present during certain hours. The other is at North Beach in a shallow, protected lagoon, and in the Gulf just past the lagoon. Swimming in the Gulf at north beach is excellent. The water is clean and calm and shallow. Lifeguards are present during certain hours. I think this small shortcoming is compensated for by the rest of the activities available at the park. There is no entrance fee, but toll roads provide access to Fort Desoto County Park.

Anna Maria Island (Manatee County Public Beach)
Best Family Beach - Manatee County Public Beach
Truthfully, there are many great family beaches on the Florida Gulf Coast. I choose Manatee County Public Beach as the best because it is on the most family friendly island AND is a great family beach. I should know, I grew up on this beach. This beach and the island it's on are still family oriented. The beach is located west of the City of Bradenton, at the western end of Manatee Avenue (Highway 64). The sand is beautiful and white, the water is calm, clean, and shallow enough to be kid-friendly. The beach is protected by lifeguards and there are restroom facilities, showers, a gift shop, a pier to walk on or to fish from, a picnic area, and of course there is the Cafe On The Beach when you get hungry.
Anna Maria is a residential community that caters to a wide range of visitors from all over the world. It is a quiet island without high-rises, big hotels, or nightlife. The focus is on relaxing and enjoying the beach and the community.
There are plenty of restaurants, from seafood to Italian and Indian cuisine and everything in-between. From Manatee Public Beach you can walk all the way to the north tip of the island if you care to (many do) in about 2 hours. If you need some adventure, go parasailing, take a charter fishing trip or a tour boat to Egmont Key. People who vacation on Anna Maria Island keep coming back year after year.
Another great thing about Anna Maria is the beautiful water. Anna Maria has some of the clearest water on the west coast of Florida. Check out some of the photos of the Gulf waters at Anna Maria I took during the month of May. the water was so beautiful I just couldn't stop taking photos!

Lido Key / St. Armands
Lido Key ist eine kleine Insel, die Sarasota vorgelagert ist. Mittelpunkt ist der St. Armand Circle, um den rundherum die abendlichen Aktivitäten der Gegend starten.
St. Armand's Circle ist ein Spiegelbild all der Dinge, die das Leben in Sarasota so angenehm machen ... Straßencafés und feine Restaurants, Shopping in kleinen Boutiquen, gemütliches Bummeln mit einer Eiswaffel in der Hand und ein Hauch des nahegelegenen Meeres in der Luft.
Restaurants, Shops und trotz der ungezählten Mercedes, Jaguar etc. sind die Preise doch noch 'normal' geblieben.
Es ist genau wie es sich John Ringling einst vorgestellt hatte, als er St. Armand's 1917 kaufte.
Probieren Sie einmal 'Tommy Bahama', ein Restaurant im ersten Stock eines im Kolonialstil gestalteten Gebäudes - im Erdgeschoss ein gleichnamiger Shop. Vermutlich das beste Lokal der Gegend!
Myakka River State Park

Myakka River State Park is one of Florida's oldest and largest state parks. The "Florida Wild and Scenic Myakka River" flows through 57 square miles of wetlands, prairies and woodlands. Myakka is popular for hiking, fishing, camping, and wildlife observation.
Entrance fees are $5.00 per vehicle for 2 to 8 persons.
The park is open everyday, 8:00 AM until Sunset.
Siesta Key

It's only 15 minutes from downtown Sarasota, parking is free, it has a snack bar and restroom facilities and is a short distance from Siesta Village where there are plenty of great island restaurants for lunch or dinner (bathing suits are considered proper attire in many restaurants as long as you have a shirt and at least a pair of flip-flops on your feet). The sand is the softest, whitest sugar sand you will find anywhere and the beach is very wide. siesta_key_beach_image.jpg
This beach is protected by lifeguards and attracts fairly heavy crowds on weekends and holidays. The beach is very flat and is a popular beach for walking. You can even ride a bike and push baby strollers on the hard-packed sand near the water.
The water is shallow and slopes gently into deeper water. Normally the water is cleaner and clearer here than anywhere else in the area.
Nokomis Beach

Casey Key is a unique island. It is strictly residential with only a few small motels near the southern end. If you enter the island from the northern end there is no place to stop or see the beach until you drive about 4 miles of winding road (left) and arrive at Nokomis Beach
Caspersen Beach
Caspersen Beach, the most natural and remote beach in this part of the state. The shoreline is dominated by native foliage. A very quiet beach. This is a very beautiful place and since there are no lights along the shore at night it is a place where many sea turtles nest successfully.
Manasota Beach
Manasota Beach has lifeguards and facilities and fairly well maintained picnic areas. This is a favorite beach for egg-laying sea turtles. This is a popular beach, but most visitors don't venture far from the lifeguard tower. There is a lot of beach to walk and no condominiums, businesses, or restaurants.
Blind Pass Park

The beach at Blind Pass Park, one of my favorite beaches. It too is very quiet, but does attract a good weekend crowd. There is no town or significant residential development close by, just a few beach houses.
Blind Pass on Manasota Key has lots of vegetation on the upper beach. It has some of the most prolific sea grape trees around.
Stump Pass Beach State Recreation Area
The park is about a mile long and has no buildings beyond the restrooms, which are located by the parking lot and entrance. Boaters visit the large treeless beach at Stump Pass. Lots of sea turtles lay their eggs on this beach.

Boca Grande Public Beach parking area #2, also known as the Seagrape access. It is of course exactly between access #1 and access #3. This is a beautiful beach with lots of white sand, beautiful clear water, some small dunes and a wooden dune walkover from the parking lot.
Sanibel Island (Bowmans Beach)
Sanibel makes a powerful statement about itself by setting aside nearly one-third of the island as a wildlife preserve. Sanibel is a large island--twelve miles long and, in some places, three miles wide.There are grocery and other food stores on the island, including a health-food store. There are 5 gas stations on Sanibel, including Amoco, Hess, and Shell. Excellent medical care is available on the island. An outstanding selection of restaurants is available, and island artists are well represented in the many art and craft shops. If you need something to read or want to know more about the island and its history, of course stop by MacIntosh Books, an island landmark.By far the largest attractions on Sanibel are the Ding Darling Wildlife Refuge, the beaches, and the water in general for boating and fishing.

What to Expect
BOARDWALK
A 2.25-mile raised boardwalk takes visitors through four distinct environments: a pine upland, a wet prairie, a cypress forest, and a marsh. Interpretive signs along the boardwalk and a field guide and Children's Activity Book available at the admissions desk in the Blair Center allow each visitor to take the self-guided tour. Benches and rain shelters are along the trail. For those who do not wish to walk the full 2.25 miles, an optional trail shortens the walk to one mile. Volunteer naturalists are usually on the boardwalk to answer questions. Allow about 2-3 hours.
Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary is open for visitors every day of the year except during violent weather.

Marco Island liegt im südwesten Floridas am Rande der Everglades.
Mit ca. 36 Quadratkilometern (9km lang und 6,5 km breit) ist sie die größte Insel der unter Naturschutz stehenden “Ten Thousand Islands”.
Die Entstehungsgeschichte Marco Islands geht bis ins Jahr 800 v.Chr. zurück, als Indianer die Insel besiedelten.
Durch geschickte und bedachte Bauplanung ist die natürliche Schönheit der Insel erhalten geblieben.
Abseits vom Massentourismus weisen hier nur wenige Reklameschilder auf Fast-Food-Ketten hin.
Zahlreiche Geschäfte laden zum Bummeln ein. Radfahrer und Spaziergänger sind hier vergleichsweise häufig anzutreffen. Die zulässige Geschwindigkeit ist auf 35 mhp beschränkt, dies trägt zur gemütlichen Ausstrahlung der Insel bei. Hier fühlen sich Menschen aller Altersgruppen wohl.
Die breiten und sauberen Strände laden zu herrlichen Strandspaziergängen oder einfach nur zum Faulenzen beim Sonnenbad ein.
17 Miles Turner River Loop Road (Big Cypress National Preserve)

There are two popular scenic drives within Big Cypress National Preserve. One is the 27 mile Loop Road that travels through dwarf cypress forest, pine forests and deep strands. The other is the 17 mile Turner River / Wagonwheel / Birdon Roads Loop.This drive takes you by open prairies and popular wading bird feeding areas. While visiting the Preserve, take the time to leave the beaten trail of US 41 (the Tamiami Trail) and take a more leisurely journey along one of these scenic drives. While traveling along the scenic drives, remember that it is illegal to feed or harass wildlife. Do not attempt to approach alligators.
