Hallo
Nach dem wir vor ein paar Tagen darüber gelesen hatten das der
North Rim des Grand Canyon wegen eines Waldbrandes geschlossen
wurde, können wir nun keine genaue Information darüber finden ob
die Zufahrt (Highway 67) nun offen oder geschlossen ist.
Da wir in 14 Tagen dort sein werden sind wir uns nicht sicher ob wir unsere vorgebuchte Cabin auch beziehen können.

Genau da wollten wir auf unserer Tour die in knapp 12 Tagen startet auch hin.
Schön, dass man hier solche interessante Informationen findet.
Gibt es hier auch sowas wie ein Newcomer-Forum? Man weiss ja gar nicht so recht, wo man anfängt oder einfach irgendwo ganz frech einhaken?!

Ich war natürlich schon auf der Seite des Nationalparkservice aber diesen
Link kannte ich noch nicht und kann ihn auch nicht direkt finden.

Wie waren die Öffnungszeiten der letzten Jahre. Vielleicht kennt ja jemand eine Seite wo das steht. Die Lodge dort ist erst ab 15 Mai buchbar. Heißt das dann auch, dass die Straße dorthin auch erst ab Hotelöffnung aufgemacht wird.
Dieses Jahr war ja schon Anfang Mai angeblich auf.
Haben den North Rim zwischen 09/10 Mai 2008 schon fest eingeplant

Solange Highway 67 schneefrei ist kann man auch zwischen Oktober und Mai zum North Rim fahren,
unabhängig davon ob Lodge, Visitor Center, etc. geöffnet sind.
Anfang Mai solltest du da eigentlich gute Karten haben.

More about off-season visits to the North Rim
Highway 67 into the North Rim remains open to public travel through mid-November, but from mid-November on, Highway 67 may close for the season on short notice due to major storms and heavy snowfall. Check with the Arizona Department of Transportation for road conditions (www.dot.state.az.us).
During daytime visitation, from mid-October until the final closure of Highway 67, emergency services ONLY are provided by the National Park Service. Visitors are reminded to pay special attention to their gas gauge, since gas will no longer be available in the park. Food service will not be available. Only portable toilets will be provided.
Once the Arizona Department of Transportation closes Highway 67 south of Jacob Lake to vehicle traffic for the winter season, the North Rim of Grand Canyon National Park also closes to vehicle traffic.
The gate at Jacob Lake is closed and locked and the gate at the North Rim entrance station is closed and locked. The National Park Service does not unlock the entrance station gate for public vehicle access until North Rim visitor facilities open up for the season in mid-May.
During the winter period when the North Rim entrance station gate is closed, the only public access into the national park is on foot, skies, or snowshoes. Snowmobiles are not allowed inside Grand Canyon National Park. Hikers and cross-country skiers are permitted to use the park's group campsites throughout the winter months if they have obtained a permit through the park's

Genauer als Mitte Mai konnte ich noch keine Info für 2008 finden. Nehme an, dass das auch mit den Witterungsbedingungen zusammenhängt.
9./10. Mai 2008 sollte somit noch nicht möglich sein.

Oha, ein nicht zu verachtendes Problem, vom Gate zum Rim sind es ca. 13 Meilen ... :?

Wie wäre es als Atlernative mit dem Toroweap Point? Mindestens so spektakulär wie der North Rim und Anfang Mai mit Sicherheit problemlos zu erreichen (SUV vorausgesetzt).

Ich werde eh nicht meine Reiseroute großartig ändern können....evtl. ab Page später noch einen Abstecher zum South Rim.
Aber trotzdem Danke für die Antworten. Hilft mir schon weiter und das vieles vom Wetter wohl abhängt war mir klar.
Den Toroweap Point behalte ich mal im Auge :P
