Hallo, ich schulde Euch auch mal ein Reisebericht.

Die Reisen die WIR drüben gemacht haben, haben auch sehr viele schon gemacht - und herrlich darüber geschrieben.

Ich dachte stattdessen, ich würde mal stattdessen ein Reisebericht von jemand anderes hier einstellen. Ich hoffe es gefällt Euch. Ich werde es in Abschnitte bringen, damit es für ein Post nicht zu lang ist. Ich werde es auch (vorerst) in der original Sprache lassen. Sollte jemand etwas nicht verstehen, kann ich es auch gerne in Deutsch übersetzen.

April 22nd travelled to Fort Des Moines 4 miles - lay over all day
April 23rd travelled 16 miles
April 24th travelled 20 miles
April 25th travelled 21 miles; Sunday
April 26th travelled 19 miles
April 27th travelled 16 miles
April 28th travelled 18 miles
April 29th travelled 17 miles
April 30th travelled 18 miles
May 1st travelled 11 miles
May 2nd travelled 3 miles; camped in Cainsville (=> Kanesville- Council Bluffs, Iowa)
May 3rd travelled 12 miles and camped on the Missouri River. here we remained until the evening of the 5th in consequences of high winds. Here we formed our company with the Mathews and others to the number of 13 wagons and 50 persons, men, women and children. On the evening the 5th, we commenced crossing the river but were stopped by heavy rains. Part of the company remained on one side of the river and part on the other. On the morning of the 6th we all got across safe and at 11 o'clock A.M. we turned our faces westward and took up the line of march and travelled 6 miles.
May 7th travelled 13 miles; camped on Papsa
May 8th travelled 12 miles; crossed Elkhorn River and camped on a small lake
May 9th travelled 15 miles; camped on Circular Lake
May 10th travelled 20 miles; camped on Sell Creek. Here the prospects were very good for a battle with the Indians but we passed without any difficulty.
May 11th travelled 19 miles and camped on a lake.
May 12th travelled 5 miles; crossed Loop Ford (=> Loup) and camped on the west bank
May 13th travelled up Loop Fork 25 miles
May 14th travelled up Loop Fork 13 miles
May 15th turned across the bluffs towards Platte River, weather very cold, had some snow and travelled 12 miles
May 16th travelled up the Platte 20 miles.Crossed Wood River and camped on the west bank
May 17th travelled the timber of the Platte for 2 miles. Camped for the remainder of the day.
May 18th travelled up the Platte 14 miles. Timber and grass plenty.
May 19th continued up Platte 22 miles. Wood and grass plenty.
May 20th continued up Platte 19 miles. Wood and grass plenty.
May 21st continued up the Platte 17 miles; Camped at Williams Island
May 22nd continued up the Platte 20 miles; Camped at Timber Island
May 23rd remained in camp. Killed two deer and 2 antelope. Had a feast at 4 P.M.. We spread a table big enough for all to sit down at once.
May 24th travelled up the Platte 20 miles. No wood for 200 miles.
May 25th travelled up the Platte 20 miles. Buffalo chips for fire.
May 26th travelled up the Platte 19 miles. Crosssed Bluff Fork, camped one half mile west of it
May 27th travelled up the Platte 19 miles through heavy sand
May 28th camped
May 29th travelled up the Platte 21 miles. Camped near Ash Hollow and Lone Tree
May 30th travelled up the Platte 10 miles
May 31st continued our travel 21 miles

June 2nd continued our travel 22 miles. Had rain. Camped at Chimney Rock.
June 3rd continued our travel 22 miles. Camped on Spring Creek
June 4th continued our travel 20 miles. Camped. Plenty of wood.
June 5th travelled up the Platte 22 miles. Camped 5 miles below Fort Laramie.
June 6th continued our travel 12 miles. Passed by Fort Laramie
June 7th continued our travel through the Black Hills 18 miles
June 8th continued our travel in the Black Hills 18 miles, wood plenty
June 9th and 10th we remained in camp 2 days. I was sick.
June 11th continued our travel 25 miles. Camped on the Platte. Wood, water and grass plenty
June 12th continued over the hills occasionally on the bottoms, travelled 30 miles
June 13th continued up the Platte 18 miles
June 14th continued up the Platte 17 miles. Over the hills and heavy sands, often to the bottom and then to the hills again.
June 15th remained in camp
June 16th continued our travel, passed Upper Ferry. Ascended the bluffs and took left hand road. Camped on Platte River for the last time. Travelled 20 miles.
June 17th (...); camped on Sage Springs Creek. Grass scarce, used sage brush for fire wood.
June 18th continued our travel 20 miles. Passed by alkali streams and lakes. Camped on the banks of Sweetwater, 2 miles below Independence Rock
June 19th continued our travel 23 miles, passed by Independence Rock at 7 A.M. Passed by Devil's Gate and camped on Sweetwater
June 20th continued our travel 18 miles. Camped 1 ½ miles above second ford.
June 21st continued our travel up Sweetwater 28 miles. Grass scarce.
June 22nd continued our travel 5 miles and camped for the remainder of the day.
June 23rd continued our travel up the river 20 miles. Camped on the North Branch of the Sweetwater.
June 24th, 25th and 26th we remained in camp.
June 27th continued our travel 14 miles. Camped on Sweetwater for the last time.
June 28th continued our travel 28 miles. Passed by the summit of Rocky Mountains. 8 o?clock camped on the banks of Little Sandy. Grass and wood very scarce.
June 29th continued our travel 20 miles. Crossed Big Sandy and camped at Sulphur Springs. We are now in what is called the Green River desert. No water and but very little grass for 42 miles.
June 30th continued our travel. Left Sulphur Springs about noon. Stopped at dark and grazed the cattle. Started again about 10 o'clock at night. travelled night. Arrived at Green River at 8 o'clock A.M.

Ich bin auf jeden Fall auch mit dabei. Scheint eine interessante Reise zu werden. Von mir aus kann es jetzt auch gleich richtig losgehen.

Ich hoffe gestern waren die Berge nicht zu anstrengend. Heute haben wir leider noch einen Verlust zu melden - und wir trennen uns von einige Wegegefährten...

July 1st crossed the river, continued our travel to the first branch of Green River. Making about 42 miles.
July 2nd continued our travel 11 miles to Balsam Fir Grove. Wood, water and grass good.
July 3rd remained in camp
July 4th continued our travel 18 miles to fork of Green River. Late in the evenening we had a heavy snow storm.
July 5th remained in camp
July 6th continued our travel 24 miles.to Bear River camp.
July 7th continued our travel 22 miles down Bear River. Camped 2 miles west of Thomas Fork.
July 8th continued our travel 20 miles down Bear River
July 9th remained in camp on account of Dilles Autry being very sick.
July 10th about half past 6 P.M., he departed this life. On the morning of the 11th about 7 o'clock we buried him in the best manner that our circumstances would afford, on the banks of Bear River 12 miles above Soda Springs.
July 11th continued our travel 20 miles. Passed Soda Springs, left Bear River, camped 5 miles west of the fork of the Oregon and California roads
July 12th continued our travel 22 miles, crossing high mountain. Small grass not plenty.
July 13th continued our travel 23 miles. Road generally goad. Camped 4 miles east of Gravel Creek
July 14th continued our travel 28 miles over mountains and valleys.
July 15th continued our travel 12 miles
July 16th continued our travel 24 miles tothe beautiful valley of Raft River. Rainy this morning.
July 17th continued our travel 8 miles to the west branch of Raft River. Grass, wood and water plenty.
July 18th (...) and water plenty
July 19th continued our travel 21 miles to Goose Creek. Plenty of grass, wod and water.
July 20th continued our travel 18 miles up Goose Creek.
July 21st continued our travel 24 miles to Spring Valley
July 22nd remained in camp
July 23rd continued our travel up the valley 20 miles. Camped 3 miles east of Hot Springs
July 24th continued our travel 23 miles, passed Hot Springs
July 25th continued our travel 13 miles and campd on the first brach of the Humboldt.
July 26th continued our travel down the creek to the Humboldt River 10 miles.
July 27th continued oru travel 16 miles down the Humboldt. Grass good.
July 28th continued down the Humboldt 18 miles.
July 29th continued down the Humboldt 24 miles. Left the Mathews company at noon.
July 30th continued down the Humboldt 30 miles. Passed through the 20 mile desert.
July 31st continued down the river 25 miles. Grass plenty.

Das ist die harte Realität des Wilden Westens, nicht so schön, wie man es sich im allgemeinen vorstellt.

August 12th about 9 o'clock A.M. we started into the desert and continued our travel all day and night. We stopped 3 times to feed and graze our cattle. We reached Carson River on the morning of the 13th. The desert is about 42 miles.
August 13th continued up Carson River 4 miles. Camped for the remainder of the day. Grass scarce.
August 14th continued up Carson River 18 miles. Good grass. Good grass.
August 15th continued up Carson River 18 miles. Good grass.
August 16th continued up Carson River 19 miles. Good grass. The gold digging.
August 17th continued up Carson River 20 miles. Good grass to Carson Valley.
August 18th continued up the valley 11 miles and camped near the Mormon Station.
August 19th continued up the valley 6 miles and camped.
August 20th continued up the valley 16 miles to canyon and camped.
August 21st continued up the canyon 13 miles and camped 3 miles east of the first summit.
August 22nd continued our travel 9 miles. Ascended the first summit of Upland Lake.
August 23rd continued our travel 17 miles up the Nevada Mountains. Ascended the main ridge.
August 24th continued our travel 13 miles down the mountains. Camped at Cold Springs.
August 25th continued down the mountain 13 miles.
August 26th continued our travel 10 miles. Arrived at Placerville at 2 o'clock P.M.

Placerville, California. May 1st, 1853

Dear Affectionate Family:
(...) Dear Companion, you said you wanted to know when I was coming home. That is more than I can now tell, but just as soon as I possibly can. We have our business in shape that it will take some time to wind it up. I am as anxious to be home as you are to have me there. Earp and I are still working together. He is in good health. We have our house about finished and he is now gone to Sac City to lay in a stock of groceries. We expect to keep a trading post here until the emigration all comes in this fall and then sell out our stand. If we have good luck I think we will be ready to come home. We have built a good house, a bette one than either of us ever owned before, and in a good place for a tavern stand. We lack a good cook. (...)

I thought I would copy the journal I kept crossing the plains and send it to you, but this book is too small to be any satisfaction to only to show you our progress of travel from day to day. The figures at the first end of the line show the day of the month, those at the later end show the number of miles travelled that day. (...)

Nun kann ich mit meiner "Lösung" kommen.  

Als solches ist nichts berühmtes an Herrn Romans. Er ist halt zufälligerweise mein Ur-Ur-Großvater. Ich betreibe halt ein wenig Ahnenforschung (und glücklicherweise ein Teil meiner Verwandschaft auch   ). Von einer Großkusine habe ich den Abschrift dieser Wanderschaft bekommen, und es hat mich einfach fasziniert. Heute bereise ich den Kontinent und beschwere mich wenn der Tempomat, elektrische Fensteröffner oder Klimaanlage nicht funktioniert       Oder, die Straße ist etwas uneben. Oder, das Hotelbett ist vielleicht nicht ganz so bequem. Der Swimmingpool könnte schöner sein.

Ich habe inzwischen ein wenig ge-googled und habe ein paar Berichte von andere Migranten gelesen. Es hört sich nicht an wie ein Vergnügung  

Apropo, der oben im Brief erwähnte "Earp" soll, laut Legende, Nicholas Earp gewesen sein. Nicholas Earp war der Vater von Wyatt Earp. Ich habe zwar noch keine Konkrete Hinweise darauf bekommen, dass es "Nicholas" war, aber es ist durchaus plausibel. William Romans und Nicholas Earp kamen beide von Kentucky nach Iowa, und sind Nachbarn (soweit man in Iowa "Nachbar" ist) gewesen. Wahrscheinlich auch durch heirat noch miteinander verwandt...

Das ist eine wirklich interessante Sache!
Auch der Vergleich zu heutigen REisen drängt sich auf - aber wir reisen ja heute meist zum Vergnügen, nicht aus Notwendigkeit.

Das ist ja wirklich faszinierend.
Toll, wenn man als Amerika-Fan auf eine solche AHnen zurückblicken kann
