United Airlines is bankrupt, and still operating under legal protection from its creditors, while the company sorts out its finances. Routes are undergoing considerable changes at the moment - as is everything from inflight catering, to entertainment.
Once the darling of the US, United Airlines is a sickly bird at the moment. However, against the commercial wind it is still resolutely flying, with both long haul from London to the US, domestically on many routes inside the US, and from there to other Asian and South American destinations.
Once famous for it's food and lounges, there is a still a First Class section on domestic flights which is well worth it. Alas United have taken on many of the features of a no-frills carrier with cramped seats, food is limited long-haul (and United now charge for it in economy on domestic), alcohol must now be paid for in Economy, entertainment isn't as modern as other airlines, and the Frequent Flyer scheme isn't the best in the Star Alliance. However the lounges are good, ticket prices are cheap, and United are very good at upgrading from economy to business class.
In 2004 United started its domestic PS (Premium Service) on New York-Los Angeles and New York-San Francisco routes, offering a three-cabin configuration with new First Class seats up front: this service has proved remarkably popular, and have shown that there is a market for a superior quality product within the US, but it remains to be seen if United can roll the same success across it's network.
Ansonsten halten sich ja hartnäckig Gerüchte über eine Fusion mit USAir ...
